Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement Plans: Which Is Right for You?
Open enrollment is one of the most consequential windows of the year for Medicare-eligible seniors. The choices made during this period can shape your healthcare access, out-of-pocket exposure and provider flexibility for the entire year ahead. Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans are both designed to fill gaps in Original Medicare, but they work in fundamentally different ways.
Understanding Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, bundles several key forms of coverage into a single plan offered by an approved private insurer. These plans typically operate within networks, meaning your access to doctors and facilities may be limited to those who participate with the plan.
Key features include:
- Network-based care through HMOs or PPOs
- Prescription drug coverage often included
- Additional benefits such as dental, vision and hearing care
- Costs that vary depending on the plan and your usage
Understanding Medicare Supplement Plans
Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap, work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help cover costs such as copayments, coinsurance and deductibles. You generally retain the freedom to see any provider that accepts Medicare nationwide. Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, Medigap does not provide additional access to other services not covered by Parts A and B.
Comparing Your Options
Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans can both provide valuable coverage, and neither type is universally better. The right choice depends on your personal circumstances, including your health history, how often you travel, your preferred providers and your financial priorities.
